Plein Air Painting Day at Blakely State Park
During the first week of December I had the opportunity to paint with a fellow painter and friend, Harold Whittaker. Harold and I met at one of the ESAC art festivals in Fairhope and he expressed the interest to spend a day with me and observe my plein air painting technique and to put a little paint on canvas himself. We decided to paint at Blakely State Park in Spanish Fort, Alabama. The park has a little of everything you could ask for as a landscape painter. It is also a civil war battlefield. The weather was perfect, and after that first cup of coffee we were ready to paint. I did a demo in the morning of a lone cedar tree standing proud, growing on top of a bunker. After that we had a great lunch and were back to the easel. Harold was a quick learner and we both decided to paint a road guarded by large live oak trees draped with moss. All in all "a great day at the office", and looking forward to another trip to the park. Hopefully these plein air studies will turn in to larger paintings this coming spring.
Fall 2011 Art Festival Season Ends With A Best Of Show
Thanks for visiting my site and and for your continued support. Over the past year many people have come to a show and mentioned they visited my website to see what was new for the shows. That's a great way to get an idea of what will be displayed and make sure a painting you are interested will be there. One of the best parts of participating in Outdoor art festivals is getting to meet and converse with people from all over the country. From California to New York and from Michigan to Florida. I always look forward to your comments and ideas for new paintings. I would like to post some of your comments so please keep writing. If you have questions about art in general I will do my best to answer or another reader may have something to add.
The Peter Anderson Festival held on the November 5th and 6th was a major success being awarded the Best of Show Award. Over 300 artists displayed some incredible work so I am truly honored to be recognized for my body of work. I participated in this show for the first time last year and was so inspired by the work and the festival's organization I could not wait for this year's show. I painted several paintings with this festival in mind and fortunately it payed off.
I am already looking forward to the spring shows. I am planning to participate in shows in Atlanta, Birmingham, Jackson, Tupelo and Oxford. As soon as the schedule is set I will post the dates. I hope to see you at a show.

Plein air painting at Blakely State Park in Spanish Fort, Alabama.

One of the best parts of participating in outdoor festivals is getting to meet and discuss art with so many terrific people. It is important to me to get comments from festival goers as well as response to my paintings.

Here I am with 2 gentlemen discussing the illusion of distance in the painting titled "Giants In Their Field", at the Fairhope Festival Of Art in October 2010.

Sunny Dunes is one of nine recent paintings finished and displayed at The Gore Galleries on the MC Campus.

Shown above are Tripp and Megan Kappel holding Kappel's Creek. We recently met in Fairhope so I could deliver a painting they commissioned. This was a fun painting to do because we talked about it as we visited at several Art Festivals over a period of time. We looked at 3 different paintings of mine that appealed to them and we took elements of all to create Kappel's Creek.
